PSHE
Intent
(what do we intend pupils to learn in this subject; what do we want them to be able to do?)
The intention is to develop the whole child to provide them with the knowledge, skills needed to protect and enhance their wellbeing. At the Aconbury Centre we are committed to providing a high-quality educational experience for all pupils. Our curriculum determines and underpins the whole ethos of our school which is that we want all pupils to achieve and to do well in all areas. Our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is taught through both discreet and cross-curricular lessons but also underpins all activities, educational visits (if and when appropriate), form time and guest speakers/visitors.
Implementation
(how is it delivered)
Through lessons, pupils will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. Work is carried out on ‘mind-set and attitudes’ to inspire all pupils to achieve and believe in themselves, creating active, confident members of the community. Lessons will provide pupils with the knowledge they need to stay safe and to know when and how they can ask for help. We will cover the following topics throughout the Academic year:
- Relationships and Sex Education
- British Values and Tolerance
- Career Skills
- Target Setting and Personal Development
- Drugs and Alcohol
- Smoking
- County Lines
- Knife Crime
- Personal Safety and First Aid
- Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination
Students will work through their own booklet for each topic, with a focus on literacy and practical learning. At the end of each topic they will take the AQA Entry level exam paper. They will produce a folder with evidence of learning along with a qualification to take to their next school, whether that is at a mainstream school or our KS4 centre at St. David’s.
We encourage outside speakers and professionals to work with our pupils. Currently we have PC Jo Utley as a guest speaker covering ‘Drugs and Alcohol’, ‘County lines’ and ‘Prejudice and Discrimination in Community’.
Our Head of Centre is a specialist and will deliver CPR and Water Safety to our pupils. We also aim to plan a visit to the Hereford Fire Brigade as part of our Personal Safety topic.
Qualifications / Accreditations offered
Currently we offer the AQA Entry qualification Level 1,2 or 3 for the above topics listed.
Intent
(what do we intend pupils to learn in this subject; what do we want them to be able to do?)
The intention is to develop the whole child to provide them with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to protect and enhance their wellbeing. Through lessons, pupils will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them.
At The St David’s Centre, pupils are taught:
- To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.
- Opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
- The skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
- Opportunities to develop positive personal attributes such as resilience, self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy.
Our PSHE curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils, preparing them for life in the wider world.
Implementation
(how is it delivered)
PSHE and RSE is taught in weekly lessons of 40 minutes’ and every day in form time where we hold regular debates via Votes for Schools about a current topic linked to SMSC and British Values. Pupils have the opportunity to vote on the weekly topic, these votes are real and are sent to the relevant leaders/organisations. We then discuss the results which have been gathered from pupils all over the UK.
These topics are based around 3 key themes as identified by the PSHE Association:
- Living in the wider world
- Health and wellbeing
- Relationships
Qualifications / Accreditations offered
AQA PSE Award or Certificate
Intent
(what do we intend pupils to learn in this subject; what do we want them to be able to do?)
Our PHSE curriculum promotes the personal, social, spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils, preparing them for life in the wider world as active and confident members of the community.
At H3, we are focussed on developing the whole child and we aim to provide them with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to protect and enhance their wellbeing.
Through PHSE lessons, pupils will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future, they will:
learn how to build and maintain successful relationships;
learn the skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives;
be given opportunities to develop positive personal attributes such as resilience, self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy.
Lessons intend to inspire all pupils to achieve and believe in themselves.
Implementation
(how is it delivered)
PSHE and RSE is taught in discreet weekly lessons either face to face at the Hub or online over Tute. Whilst our PHSE Programme of learning is followed for each year group, adaptation of resources, learning and lessons based on the needs of pupils is paramount and flexibility in the style of delivering is important.
In KS3 and KS4 we use the EC Publishing PSHE resources and the PSHE Association Organisation guidelines to inform our curriculum planning. They cover all of the required objectives for each year group and fulfil the requirements of the 2020 Statutory Relationships and Health Education through a broad and balanced curriculum.
Our PHSE lessons are based around 3 key themes as identified by the PSHE Association:
- Living in the wider world
- Health and wellbeing
- Relationships
Alongside this, we use Votes for Schools as an additional element to our provision at H3. We use this, as and when appropriate, to deliver lessons and encourage engagement, discussion, debate and to support in developing and sharing personal opinions on important current topics.
In addition, our pupils independently work towards the Award/Certificate in Lessons in Financial Education (LIFE) which is provided through the London Institution of Banking and Finance (LIBF). This covers our Financial and Economic Education.
