Intent
(what do we intend pupils to learn in this subject; what do we want them to be able to do?)
Our intent is to teach our young people the essentials of English: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. At Key Stage 3 we aim to give pupils the fundamentals that will allow them to access the next step in the English curriculum pathway.
Implementation
(how is it delivered)
For those pupils who come to us as part of the intervention programme we utilise topic based learning to incorporate the key skills needed that will allow them to reintegrate back into their mainstream setting when their placement with us is over. We offer differentiated tasks allowing all pupils to be challenged appropriately whilst with us whether this be for a ten-week placement or a longer term one and through a broad and balanced curriculum we facilitate pupils to not only access what is needed but also to foster an enjoyment of the subject once again; through the use of creative and innovative lesson planning that utilises creative writing, inference skills, drama, film analysis and reading of quality texts that have meaning and purpose for our pupils.
Pupils will study texts including: The Diary of a Young girl by Anne Frank, Roald Dahl’s Boy, Willy Russell’s Our Day Out, as well as a range of poetry and other texts linked to our topics:
- All about me
- Detectives
- Journeys
- Herefordshire

We offer Step Up to English Silver (Entry Level 1 & 2) in Year 9 for our permanent pupils. This is a stepping stone towards the GCSE that they will go on to study at our KS4 centre.

- Speaking and Listening activities encourage our pupils to articulate their ideas with as much confidence and precision as their ability and circumstances allow.
- Pupils are encouraged to write in a range of different genres and improve their skills through planning and drafting exercises.
- Pupils are exposed to past papers and exam- style questions throughout KS4.
- We aim to challenge and inspire those pupils who wish to pursue further English-based studies.
Implementation

The KS4 curriculum is delivered through a blended approach of online and classroom-based learning. The online lessons are teacher lead with incorporated elements of individual learning and assignments. The classroom-based work involves group work, discussion and research.
Our curriculum promotes the study of literary texts each year, alongside the sophistication of the skills being taught gradually increasing, with spiralling back activities to ensure key content is secure.
